International Muay Thai Seminar Aims for UNESCO Recognition
Thailand hosts 101 international participants from 10 countries in Phetchaburi to promote Muay Thai as a global cultural heritage.
On August 5, 2026, Thivalrat Angkinant, Chair of the House Committee on Religion, Arts, and Culture, inaugurated the 2026 International Muay Thai Seminar at Rajaprachanugroh 47 School in Cha-am, Phetchaburi. Organized by the Siam Yuth Indigenous Thai Sports Association, the event runs from August 5 to 12, bringing together 101 participants from 10 countries alongside local trainers and athletes.
The primary objective of this gathering is to standardize Muay Thai practices and advocate for its inclusion as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Officials highlighted Muay Thai as a significant 'soft power' asset for Thailand, noting that the increasing number of international attendees reflects its growing global popularity. Beyond the seminar, international participants are expected to travel within Thailand, which organizers hope will provide a boost to the local economy.
For residents and travelers, this event underscores the ongoing efforts to formalize Muay Thai’s international status. While the seminar serves as a platform for cultural exchange and professional development, the official designation by UNESCO remains a future goal. It is not yet confirmed how these international standards will be implemented across global training centers or when the formal UNESCO application process will reach its final decision.
