Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary Temporarily Closed Following Fatal Tiger Attack

The victim was discovered near the Thap Salao stream with injuries consistent with a wild animal attack, and fresh tiger tracks were identified in the immediate vicinity.

Sukhee Boonsang, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Division, stated that while it is suspected that a tiger from the sanctuary is responsible, the specific animal has not yet been identified. Researchers from the Khao Nang Ram Wildlife Research Station are currently reviewing camera trap footage to monitor tiger behavior in the area. Officials noted that tigers in this region typically avoid human contact, and it is possible the animal involved may be elderly or injured, hindering its ability to hunt natural prey.

In response to the incident, the sanctuary has implemented five safety measures, including a temporary suspension of tourism activities and increased vigilance for staff working in the field. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid high-risk areas within the sanctuary. Further investigations are ongoing to confirm the identity of the tiger and to understand the circumstances that led to this rare encounter. The sanctuary remains closed until further notice to ensure public and staff safety.
