Laotian Leaf-nosed Bat Discovered for the First Time in Thailand

According to a report from Khaosod Online, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has announced the discovery of the Laotian Leaf-nosed Bat (Hipposideros rotalis) within the Hin Sam Wan recreation area in Bueng Kan province. This finding is the result of a vertebrate biodiversity study conducted by the Royal Forest Department, which began in early 2025 with support from the Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) office.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, stated that this discovery highlights the ecological richness of the Hin Sam Wan forest. Previously, this species was only known to inhabit areas within Laos. While the bat is currently classified as having a low risk of extinction, the discovery serves as significant scientific evidence regarding Thailand's biodiversity and the potential for future findings within the country's protected forests.

For residents and visitors, this discovery underscores the ecological importance of the Hin Sam Wan area. While the presence of this species does not currently impact public access to the recreation site, it reinforces the value of conservation efforts in the region. Further research is expected to continue as part of the ongoing project to document wildlife diversity.
