Doctor Warns Solo Travelers of Carbon Monoxide Risks in Accommodations

On July 31, 2026, a Thai doctor known as 'Dr. Benz Masterpiece' shared a warning on TikTok regarding the silent threat of carbon monoxide poisoning for solo backpackers. According to the report by Khaosod Online, the doctor highlighted that this risk is particularly prevalent in European regions where travelers may rely on indoor heating equipment during cold weather.

As a primary example, the doctor referenced a tragic incident from December 14, 2024, in Georgia, where 12 individuals staying in separate rooms at a resort died in a single night. The investigation indicated that a power outage led the guests to use a generator indoors to combat the cold. The accumulation of carbon monoxide resulted in the deaths of all 12 individuals, who were found as if they were sleeping.

Citing U.S. research, the doctor noted that there are over 3,400 recorded incidents of this nature. The most common sources of the gas are identified as hotel heating systems and water boilers. For travelers, this serves as a reminder to be aware of the placement of fuel-burning appliances in their accommodations. While the doctor emphasizes the frequency of these occurrences, it remains to be confirmed how many similar incidents go unreported or are misidentified globally.
