Thailand Proposes 'Old-for-New' Pickup Truck Exchange Program

Prachachat Business One source

The Ministry of Finance is considering a scheme to trade in old vehicles for new B20-compatible pickup trucks to boost the automotive sector and environmental standards.

According to Prachachat Business, the Thai Ministry of Finance is evaluating a proposed 'old-for-new' vehicle exchange program. Lavaron Sangsnit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, stated that the initiative would require participants to trade in their aging vehicles for new pickup trucks capable of running on B20 biodiesel. The program aims to facilitate the disposal of approximately 10,000 old vehicles annually, while simultaneously supporting Thailand's ambition to become a regional hub for automotive manufacturing and electric vehicle development.

For residents and those involved in the local automotive market, this proposal signals a potential shift in government policy aimed at modernizing the national fleet and reducing emissions. By incentivizing the adoption of B20-compatible vehicles, the government hopes to stimulate domestic demand and improve environmental outcomes. However, several details remain to be confirmed, including the specific financial incentives for participants, the timeline for implementation, and the criteria for vehicle eligibility. As the proposal is currently under review by the committee overseeing the 400 billion baht loan decree, interested parties should monitor official government announcements for further updates regarding the program's structure and launch date.
