Thai Airways Seeks Air Force Assistance to Clear Luggage Backlog

Thai Airways has requested support from the Royal Thai Air Force to manage ground operations at Suvarnabhumi Airport following significant luggage delays caused by staff shortages.

On September 27, 2026, Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri announced that the airline is facing operational challenges at Suvarnabhumi Airport, resulting in delayed flights and a backlog of over 100 pieces of passenger luggage. According to Khaosod Online, the disruption is primarily due to a shortage of ground staff, many of whom are unable to reach the airport due to ongoing flooding in the region. Furthermore, existing staff members are reportedly suffering from exhaustion after working extended shifts to manage the situation.

To address the crisis, the airline has formally requested assistance from the Royal Thai Air Force to provide personnel for ground operations. While the airline is working to resolve the backlog, officials have cautioned that only a portion of the delayed luggage can be processed today, with operations expected to continue into tomorrow.

For travelers and residents, this situation may lead to continued delays in baggage retrieval and potential flight schedule adjustments. Passengers are advised to monitor airline communications closely for updates regarding their specific flights. It remains to be confirmed how quickly the Air Force personnel can be integrated into ground operations and when normal service levels will be fully restored at the airport.
