New Supreme Patriarchal Rank Bestowed Upon Abbot of Wat Ratchaphatikaram
King Maha Vajiralongkorn has elevated Phra Phrom Wachirakon to the rank of Somdet Phra Phuttha Wachirakon, a significant appointment within the Thai Buddhist hierarchy.
According to an official announcement published in the Royal Gazette on July 14, 2026, King Maha Vajiralongkorn has bestowed the high-ranking ecclesiastical title of 'Somdet Phra Phuttha Wachirakon' upon Phra Phrom Wachirakon. The appointment, which became effective on July 12, 2026, recognizes the monk’s long-standing service and contributions to the Buddhist faith.
Somdet Phra Phuttha Wachirakon, formerly known as Sunthon Sunthrapho, is currently 83 years old and has served for 62 years in the monkhood. He holds several prominent positions, including serving as a member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand, an advisor to the ecclesiastical regional heads for regions 16, 17, and 18 (Dhammayuttika Nikaya), and as the abbot of Wat Ratchaphatikaram Worawihan in Bangkok.
