US Pledges $267 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo
The US State Department has announced $267 million in additional funding to address the severe Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has claimed nearly 3,800 lives.
According to a report by Khaosod Online citing Reuters, the United States has committed an additional $267 million (approximately 8.9 billion Thai Baht) to support efforts against the Ebola virus in Central Africa. This announcement was made during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The funding aims to bolster containment efforts as the death toll in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached 3,781, with 7,841 confirmed cases.
The current outbreak, identified as the Bundibugyo strain, was first detected in May and is considered the second-deadliest in history. DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka described the situation as a critical test for the nation, noting that the government is mobilizing scientific and operational resources alongside international partners to curb the spread. The US hopes this contribution will encourage further global support to reach a total target of $2 billion for the response.
