Thai Customs Detects Billion-Baht Export Fraud Involving US-Bound Goods
Thai Customs officials have identified approximately one billion baht in goods falsely labeled as 'Made in Thailand' for export to the United States.
According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Customs Department has uncovered a scheme involving the misrepresentation of goods intended for export to the United States. Phanthong Loykulnan, Director-General of the Customs Department, reported that during the first 11 months of the 2026 fiscal year, total Thai exports to the U.S. reached approximately 2.7 trillion baht. Within this volume, officials identified about one billion baht worth of products falsely claiming Thai origin.
The fraudulent goods primarily consist of consumer items such as clothing, luggage, and household products. Officials noted that these items do not fall within Thailand’s top 10 primary export categories to the U.S. The department distinguishes between two types of origin fraud: goods falsely labeled to enter the Thai domestic market and goods falsely labeled to facilitate international export.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to regulate trade integrity. While the identified fraud represents a small fraction of total export value, the department has warned that violators face fines of up to 500,000 baht. It remains to be confirmed how the department will adjust its inspection protocols for these specific consumer goods categories moving forward and whether further enforcement actions will be taken against the entities involved.
