Thailand Updates Fishing Regulations to Combat Blackchin Tilapia

The Thai Department of Fisheries has released a new directive clarifying the use of fishing equipment to combat the spread of the invasive blackchin tilapia. According to Deputy Director-General Prathet Sorarak, the move aims to resolve legal ambiguities that previously hindered eradication efforts. The guidelines, developed under the 2015 Fisheries Decree, provide a unified framework while allowing provincial fisheries committees to adapt rules to local environmental contexts.

Fishing gear is now categorized into three groups. The first group includes standard equipment such as hooks, gill nets, and cast nets, which can be used immediately without special permission. The second group consists of tools requiring specific authorization, while the third group—which includes folding traps and certain types of bag nets—remains strictly prohibited.
