Thailand Proposes Increased Strategic Reserves for Rice and Palm Oil

The Ministry of Commerce is planning to boost national food reserves to mitigate potential price volatility and supply risks caused by El Niño-related drought.

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Internal Trade has proposed an increase in strategic safety stocks for rice and crude palm oil. Director-General Wattanasak Sur-iam stated that the plan aims to bolster national food security and stabilize domestic market prices in anticipation of drought conditions linked to the El Niño phenomenon. The proposal suggests raising rice reserves by 30% and crude palm oil reserves by 20%.

Officials noted that while global rice stocks are rising, prices remain high as other nations also increase their reserves. Despite these concerns, the Ministry assured that Thailand, as a major producer, is unlikely to face shortages of rice or bottled palm oil, and significant price hikes are not expected. However, the government is closely monitoring other agricultural products, specifically cassava and corn, where domestic production may fall short of demand, necessitating imports.

For residents and travelers, this move is intended to prevent supply chain disruptions and keep essential food prices stable. While the Ministry is confident in the current supply, the final approval and implementation details of the increased reserve quotas remain to be confirmed. The government continues to monitor agricultural commodity prices to ensure that the impact of potential drought on daily consumer goods remains limited.
