Student Rescued from Sophisticated Scam in Nakhon Ratchasima
Police in Nakhon Ratchasima intervened to rescue a university student who was being coerced by a scam syndicate into transferring 800,000 baht.
On September 24, 2026, police from the Pho Klang station in Nakhon Ratchasima rescued a fourth-year university student who had been targeted by a criminal syndicate for three days. According to Khaosod Online, the scammers initially posed as mobile network representatives, accusing the student of involvement in a money laundering case. The perpetrators then transferred the call to an individual claiming to be a police officer from Ranong, who used intimidation tactics to force the student into a video call and prohibited them from disclosing the situation to others.
When the student claimed to have no funds, the scammers coerced them into forging university documents to request money from their father, falsely claiming the funds were for a three-month student exchange program in Japan. The total amount requested was 856,000 baht. The student’s father had already made an initial transfer before the police were alerted to the situation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for residents and visitors in Thailand regarding the prevalence of 'call center' scams that utilize fear and impersonation of authority figures. Authorities are currently investigating the syndicate's operations. It remains to be confirmed whether the perpetrators have been identified or if any of the transferred funds can be recovered.
