Severe Tropical Storm Dujuan Causes Fatalities and Flooding in Japan
Typhoon Dujuan has weakened to a severe tropical storm, but continues to cause heavy rainfall, flooding, and power outages across eastern Japan, resulting in at least 10 deaths.
According to reports from NHK cited by Khaosod Online, Typhoon Dujuan, which struck eastern Japan on September 21, has weakened into a severe tropical storm. Despite the downgrade, the storm continues to bring record-breaking rainfall, strong winds, and widespread flooding. As of September 24, authorities have confirmed at least 10 fatalities and four individuals remain missing.
Significant infrastructure damage has been reported, including the collapse of a levee at Lake Inbanuma in Chiba Prefecture, which led to extensive flooding in surrounding areas. Approximately 20,000 homes across Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures are currently without electricity. The agricultural sector has also been impacted, with a koi carp farm reporting the loss of approximately 100,000 fish due to floodwaters. Emergency services continue to conduct rescue operations, including a recent incident where a man was recovered from a submerged vehicle but later pronounced dead at a hospital.
For residents and travelers in the region, the situation remains hazardous due to ongoing flood risks and power disruptions.
