Thailand Seeks Trade Agreement with U.S. to Mitigate Section 301 Tariffs
The Thai Ministry of Commerce is negotiating an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) with the U.S. to potentially lower trade tariffs currently set at 12.5%.
According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Ministry of Commerce is actively working to finalize an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) with the United States. This move follows U.S. investigations under Section 301 regarding forced labor concerns and structural excess capacity.
Currently, the U.S. has imposed a 12.5% tariff on certain Thai goods due to findings related to forced labor regulations. However, countries that implement specific import bans on forced-labor products or secure an ART agreement may qualify for a reduced tariff rate of 10%. Ministry spokesperson Korranit Nonjui stated that the government is prioritizing this agreement to ensure Thai exports remain competitive against regional rivals.
