Viral '84-Camera Pole' in Chinese Village Becomes Unexpected Tourist Attraction

A peculiar sight in Chaoxia Village, Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, has captured global attention after photos of a single pole mounted with 84 CCTV cameras went viral online. Social media users jokingly dubbed the structure the 'most diligent surveillance tree in history,' sparking debates about resource allocation and privacy.

However, local authorities clarified on September 19 that the pole is not part of a massive security network. According to reports, a local campsite owner received a batch of decommissioned cameras from a security industry contact and installed them as a unique art piece several years ago. Only one of the 84 cameras is functional. The owner noted that he did not count the cameras during installation and was unaware if any additional functional units were added later.

For travelers and residents, the site has unexpectedly transformed into a popular photo spot for tourists and content creators. To prevent further confusion regarding the village's actual security infrastructure, local officials are planning to install informational signage explaining the origin of the installation. While the mystery of the 'surveillance tree' is solved, visitors should be aware that this is a decorative landmark rather than a high-tech security hub. It remains to be confirmed if any further modifications to the site will be made by village authorities to manage the influx of curious visitors.
