Thai Ministry of Transport Explores Japanese Rail Expertise at InnoTrans 2026

Thai Deputy Minister of Transport Sanphet Bunyamanee, accompanied by a delegation of rail officials, attended the InnoTrans 2026 exhibition in Berlin, Germany, to engage with Japanese rail industry leaders. The visit focused on exploring advanced technologies and management strategies, specifically the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model, which aims to maximize the value of land surrounding railway stations.

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai delegation visited the Japanese Pavilion to study how Japan manages rail infrastructure, passenger services, and maintenance. A key objective of these discussions is to address the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) financial challenges by increasing non-rail revenue. The ministry is particularly interested in a proposal to develop a 148-rai 'Medical Hub' in collaboration with Siriraj Hospital, utilizing the TOD framework to unlock the commercial potential of railway-adjacent land.

For residents and travelers, these initiatives represent a long-term effort to modernize Thailand’s rail network and improve the efficiency of station areas. While the visit highlights a strategic intent to adopt Japanese expertise to boost revenue and infrastructure quality, specific timelines for the implementation of these projects or formal agreements with Japanese partners remain to be confirmed.
