Authorities have addressed viral social media claims regarding a 'mega-flood' in Thailand, confirming heavy rain is expected but dismissing reports of continuous, non-stop downpours.
On September 22, 2026, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a formal clarification regarding viral social media reports predicting a 'mega-flood' within the next 120 hours. Nattawut Daendee, Deputy Director-General for Academic Affairs, addressed the public to distinguish between verified weather forecasts and exaggerated online claims.
The TMD confirmed that Thailand will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall between September 23 and 27, 2026. This weather pattern is driven by a strong low-pressure system, a monsoon trough, and an intensifying southwest monsoon. However, officials explicitly stated that claims of a 'mega-flood' or continuous, 24-hour rainfall are inaccurate and do not align with official meteorological data.
For residents and travelers, the primary concern remains the risk of flash floods, forest runoff, and localized water accumulation in vulnerable areas due to heavy accumulated rainfall.
