ONWR Issues Flood Warning for Central Thailand (Sept 22-26)
The Office of the National Water Resources has warned of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in five provinces along the Chao Phraya River basin.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued Announcement No. 5/2569, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand from September 22 to 26, 2026. The alert is driven by a strong low-pressure system moving from Vietnam, combined with an intensified southwest monsoon.
Residents and travelers in the lower North, lower Northeast, Central, Eastern, and upper Southern regions should remain vigilant regarding risks of flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides. Specifically, the ONWR projects that water discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam will reach approximately 1,500 cubic meters per second. This is expected to raise water levels by 0.75 to 1.25 meters in low-lying areas outside flood embankments in five provinces: Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Pathum Thani.
For those living in or visiting these areas, it is essential to monitor local weather updates and follow instructions from provincial authorities. While the ONWR has identified these specific provinces as being at risk of riverbank overflow, the exact impact on local infrastructure and transport routes remains to be confirmed.
