Ministry of Education Investigates Student Loan Fraud in Northeast Thailand
The Ministry of Education is investigating four private colleges in Northeast Thailand for allegedly using student identities to fraudulently claim Student Loan Fund (SLF) money.
On September 22, 2026, Thailand’s Minister of Education, Prasert Chantararuangthong, announced that the ministry is investigating four private educational institutions in the Northeast for suspected fraud involving the Student Loan Fund (SLF). The institutions are located in Bueng Kan (two), Sakon Nakhon (one), and Nong Bua Lamphu (one).
According to Khaosod Online, the investigation began on August 26 following reports of irregularities. Authorities are scrutinizing the entire loan process, including application submissions, identity verification, and fund disbursement. The primary concern is that these institutions may have used students' personal information to secure loans without their consent, potentially saddling innocent students with significant debt they did not incur.
For residents and students, this situation highlights potential vulnerabilities in personal data security and institutional oversight. The Ministry has pledged to take strict legal action against any government officials or staff found complicit in the scheme.
