On September 21, 2026, local administrative officials in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, conducted a drug inspection at Wat Pa Sangkhen following complaints from local residents regarding potential drug activity within the temple. During the operation, officials requested that all five residents—three monks, one novice, and the abbot—undergo urine testing.
According to Khaosod Online, the 52-year-old abbot, identified as Phra Odd, requested permission to retrieve his robes from his living quarters but subsequently disappeared. As of September 22, his whereabouts remain unknown. Upon entering the abbot's quarters, officials discovered the space in a state of extreme disarray, containing numerous items associated with drug use. A fellow monk reported that the abbot had been ordained for 28 years but rarely performed alms rounds, instead requiring food to be left outside his door with strict instructions not to enter.
For residents and visitors, this incident highlights an ongoing investigation into temple conduct and local drug enforcement. While the discovery of drug paraphernalia suggests illicit activity, the primary concern for authorities is the abbot's current location and his failure to comply with the mandatory screening.
