Thailand and China Launch Real-Time Satellite Tracking for Green Sea Turtles

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has initiated a collaborative project with China’s First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) to monitor green sea turtles in real-time. Between September 19 and 21, 2026, researchers successfully attached satellite transmitters to three green sea turtles that had been rehabilitated and were ready for release back into the wild.

This initiative is part of the 'Endangered Species Research based on Species Distribution Model' project, conducted under the China–Thailand Joint Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystems. The primary goal is to study the movement patterns and habitats of these turtles to better protect Thailand’s marine ecosystems and support the conservation of endangered sea turtle populations.

For residents and travelers, this project highlights ongoing efforts to preserve Thailand's natural biodiversity. While the tracking of these three specific turtles is underway, the long-term impact on broader conservation policies remains to be seen. Further updates regarding the data collected from these transmitters and potential future expansions of the tracking program have not yet been confirmed.
