ASEAN and Hong Kong Sign Investment Protocol to Boost Regional Supply Chains
Thailand has successfully led negotiations for a new investment protocol between ASEAN and Hong Kong, aimed at enhancing market access and industrial cooperation.
According to Khaosod Online, Thailand has successfully facilitated the signing of the first protocol to amend the ASEAN-Hong Kong, China Investment Agreement (AHKIA). The agreement was finalized during the 10th ASEAN-Hong Kong Economic Ministers Meeting held in Manila, Philippines, on September 20, 2026.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supajee Suthumpun stated that Thailand, acting as the coordinator for the agreement, helped secure commitments to open investment markets. The protocol focuses on attracting high-quality investments in sectors where Hong Kong holds significant expertise, specifically automotive parts, vehicle components, and printed circuit boards. By integrating these sectors, the initiative aims to strengthen regional supply chains and improve the competitive edge of Thai industries.
For residents and business travelers, this development signals a potential increase in cross-border industrial activity and investment-related travel between Thailand and Hong Kong. The move is expected to create new business opportunities and foster deeper economic integration within the region.
While the protocol has been officially signed, specific details regarding the implementation timeline for individual business sectors and the exact regulatory adjustments required by Thai authorities remain to be confirmed. Stakeholders are advised to monitor official government announcements for updates on how these changes will impact specific investment procedures.
