Thai Government to Address Student Loan Fund Delays Starting October 1

The Thai government plans to resolve disbursement delays in the Student Loan Fund (SLF) by injecting 9 billion baht into the budget starting October 1.

According to Prachachat Business, Paradorn Prissananantakul, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, has announced a government initiative to resolve recent disruptions in Student Loan Fund (SLF) disbursements to universities. Starting October 1, the government will increase support for the fund by 9 billion baht as part of the 2025 fiscal budget.

Minister Paradorn identified the primary challenge as the collection of outstanding debts from approximately 2.6 million borrowers. He noted that if the fund can successfully recover 30% to 40% of these debts, the government would significantly reduce the need for additional state subsidies. The current delays have caused concern regarding the continuity of financial support for students across the country.

For residents and students, this development is significant as it aims to stabilize the financial aid system that supports higher education access. While the government has committed to this budget injection, the long-term effectiveness of the debt collection strategy remains to be confirmed. Observers will be watching to see if these measures successfully clear the backlog of payments to educational institutions and ensure that future disbursements remain uninterrupted. Further updates on the implementation of this policy are expected as the October 1 start date approaches.
