Monk Assaults Acting Abbot at Ratchaburi Temple
A monk in Ratchaburi province allegedly assaulted an acting abbot following a dispute over being excluded from religious ceremonies.
On September 20, 2026, a violent altercation occurred at a temple in the Chet Samian sub-district of Ratchaburi province. According to reports from Khaosod Online, a monk physically attacked the acting abbot, Phra Prasong, in front of laypeople attending a merit-making ceremony. The assailant reportedly struck the acting abbot on the ear, resulting in a ruptured eardrum.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from the assailant’s exclusion from religious duties. The acting abbot explained that the monk had been removed from the roster for upcoming ceremonies due to a history of failing to attend scheduled events without prior notice, which caused significant inconvenience to families hosting merit-making rites. Believing the acting abbot was personally responsible for his exclusion, the monk confronted him with verbal abuse before the physical assault took place.
Phra Prasong has filed a formal complaint with the Photharam Police Station and provided medical documentation regarding his injuries. While the incident occurred in a public space within the temple, it highlights internal administrative tensions regarding monastic conduct and the management of religious services.
