Thailand Pushes to Finalize Trade Agreement with U.S. Amid Tariff Concerns
Deputy Prime Minister Supachai Sutumpun is working to conclude a Reciprocal Trade Agreement (ART) with the U.S. before potential new tariffs on excess production capacity are implemented.
During the 58th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting in Manila held on September 19–20, 2026, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Supachai Sutumpun, confirmed progress on a Reciprocal Trade Agreement (ART) with the United States. Following initial negotiations in Washington D.C. earlier this month, both nations are currently finalizing the specific legal language of the agreement to ensure clarity and alignment.
Supachai, who is currently in Japan as part of the Prime Minister’s delegation, stated that the government aims to announce the conclusion of these negotiations before the U.S. makes a final decision regarding tariffs on excess production capacity. The delegation is also scheduled to travel to New York to engage with U.S. officials and key private sector representatives to further these economic interests.
