Thailand Reports Over 22 Million International Arrivals in 2026

According to data released by Khaosod Online, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced that the country welcomed 22.18 million international tourists between January 1 and September 19, 2026. This figure represents a 3.67% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

Despite the year-to-date decline, the Ministry noted a positive trend in tourism performance during the week of September 13–19, 2026. This recent uptick was largely driven by short-haul markets. Specifically, arrivals from Malaysia surged by 29.12% compared to the previous week, attributed to travel surrounding the Malaysia Day holiday. Additionally, the Japanese market saw a significant increase of 55.36%, as travelers began arriving ahead of the 'Silver Week' holiday period, which includes Respect for the Aged Day and the Autumnal Equinox.

For travelers and residents, these figures highlight the ongoing fluctuations in Thailand's tourism sector, which remains highly sensitive to regional holiday schedules and short-haul travel trends. While the overall annual growth has slowed slightly, the recent weekly data suggests a recovery in specific segments. It remains to be confirmed how these short-term spikes will influence the total tourism revenue for the remainder of the year, as the Ministry continues to monitor global travel patterns and their impact on the national economy.
