Thailand Considers Excise Tax Adjustments for Fuel Price Management
The Ministry of Finance is evaluating the use of excise taxes to manage fuel prices for the 2027 fiscal year, ruling out any changes before October 2026.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas has addressed concerns regarding the potential use of excise tax adjustments to stabilize fuel prices. Dr. Ekniti noted that for the 2026 fiscal year, the government has only 10 billion baht in remaining fiscal space, warning that an immediate reduction in excise taxes could risk creating a 'crisis upon a crisis' for the national budget.
Consequently, the Ministry has confirmed that no adjustments to fuel excise taxes will be implemented before the end of September 2026. Officials are currently reviewing the possibility of utilizing these tax tools during the 2027 fiscal year, emphasizing that any future decisions will depend on finding the appropriate timing and economic conditions.
