Khao Yai National Park Takes Action Against Driver After Near-Miss with Wild Elephants

Khao Yai National Park officials have initiated legal proceedings against a retired government official following a dangerous driving incident within the park grounds. According to Khaosod Online, the driver was operating a vehicle at high speed when they approached a wild elephant pair, known as 'Phlai Nga Thong' and 'Ton Kla,' as they were crossing the road. The incident caused the young elephant to panic and nearly resulted in a collision with the adult elephant, forcing nearby tourists to scramble for safety.

Chaiya Huayhongthong, head of Khao Yai National Park, confirmed that a formal notice has been issued to the driver for violating park regulations. The individual faces multiple potential charges, including wildlife harassment and failure to comply with official orders. Park authorities have reiterated that all visitors must maintain a distance of at least 50 meters from wild elephants, refrain from speeding or honking, and avoid stopping to take photos at close range.

In response to the incident, the park has increased patrols and stationed additional staff at high-risk points along tourist routes. Officials have been instructed to enforce regulations strictly to prevent future occurrences. While the legal process is underway, visitors are reminded that these rules are essential for both human safety and the protection of the park's wildlife.
