Authorities Monitor Blackchin Tilapia Spread in Lam Pao Dam

According to a report from Khaosod Online, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Watcharaphol Khaokham has announced a site visit to Lam Pao Dam in Kalasin province scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026. This follows the discovery of 111 invasive blackchin tilapia in the area.

As the director of the center overseeing the blackchin tilapia crisis, Watcharaphol emphasized that the immediate priority is to contain the spread of the species, acknowledging that complete eradication will be a long-term challenge. Local fisheries officials and community members are currently working to remove the fish, some of which were found to be large, suggesting they have been established in the environment for some time.

The government has integrated efforts across 29 agencies, mobilizing local leaders across 21 affected provinces to implement concrete containment measures. For residents and travelers, this situation highlights ongoing environmental monitoring efforts in Thailand's waterways. While the presence of these fish is a significant ecological concern, there is no immediate impact on general public safety or tourism activities.
