Chonburi Restaurant Owner Targeted in Fraudulent Business Takeover Scam
A restaurant owner in Chonburi has reported being defrauded by a group of women who used her business identity to secure illegal loans before abandoning the premises.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, a restaurant owner in the Phan Thong district of Chonburi, identified as 39-year-old Nataya, has fallen victim to a sophisticated scam. A group of women approached the owner to negotiate a business takeover, providing an 8,000-baht deposit to secure the agreement.
After gaining control of the premises, the group allegedly operated the restaurant briefly while using the business's name to secure informal, high-interest loans from nine different creditors, totaling approximately 120,000 baht. Shortly after obtaining the funds, the group vacated the property and disappeared, leaving the original owner to face aggressive debt collection efforts from the creditors. CCTV footage from the restaurant has been provided as evidence to authorities to assist in the investigation.
For residents and business owners, this incident highlights the risks associated with transferring business operations and the importance of verifying the identity and intentions of potential buyers.
