Bangkok Police Dismantle Mobile Phone Fraud Ring

According to a report by Thai Post on September 21, 2026, officers from Metropolitan Police Division 8 have successfully dismantled a criminal network specializing in mobile phone installment fraud. The operation targeted a group that recruited individuals to purchase mobile phones on installment plans, only to divert the devices into the black market.

Authorities, led by Police Colonel Chotchuang Ratsamee, identified that the syndicate operated by hiring people to sign up for mobile phone contracts. Once the devices were acquired, they were immediately sold through unofficial channels, often leaving the original contract holders with the debt while the syndicate profited from the illicit sales. The investigation focused on the group's practice of acquiring 'locked' devices—phones restricted to specific carriers or payment plans—and reselling them outside of authorized retail systems.

For residents and travelers, this case highlights the risks associated with unofficial mobile phone transactions. Engaging in or facilitating 'installment fraud' can lead to serious legal consequences, including potential charges related to fraud or money laundering.
