Thailand and UAE Resume CEPA Negotiations to Boost Economic Ties
Thailand and the United Arab Emirates have officially resumed negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to strengthen trade and investment.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supachai Suthamphan has announced that Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are returning to the negotiating table to finalize a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This move follows a hiatus since the fourth round of talks concluded in September 2023, where negotiations had reached approximately 80% completion before stalling over unresolved issues.
Officials stated that both nations have now reached a consensus on previously contentious points, paving the way to address the remaining items. The goal of the agreement is to create a competitive advantage in trade and investment, as well as to foster broader cooperation between the two countries. The formal process for this agreement began in May 2023, and while significant progress has been made, some sensitive sectors and specific goods remain under discussion to ensure that the liberalization process does not negatively impact local Thai entrepreneurs.
For residents and business travelers, this development signals a potential increase in bilateral economic activity and closer commercial ties between Thailand and the UAE. However, the final scope of the agreement, particularly regarding the specific goods and services that will be subject to liberalization, remains to be confirmed as the final details are ironed out in the upcoming sessions.
