Satun Explores Seaplane Integration to Boost Island Tourism
The Thai Ministry of Transport is studying the feasibility of establishing seaplane landing sites in Satun province to improve connectivity to major islands.
According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Ministry of Transport is currently evaluating the potential for seaplane operations in Satun province. Deputy Minister of Transport Phatthaphong Phattharaprasit stated that the initiative aims to connect key maritime destinations, including Koh Lipe, Tarutao National Park, and the Adang-Rawi archipelago, with existing transport hubs like Hat Yai and Trang airports.
This project is part of a broader national strategy to position Thailand as an aviation hub. While Krabi and Phuket are expected to launch seaplane services by the end of this year, Satun is being prioritized due to its significant tourism potential, including sites like Pak Bara and the 'Stone Castle' (Prasat Hin Phan Yod).
Authorities are currently focusing on the necessary infrastructure, including water-based landing sites, safety regulations, environmental impact assessments, and specialized training for pilots and ground staff. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI) has confirmed that it has been preparing air traffic management systems for seaplanes since 2023, covering flight paths and communication protocols.
For travelers and residents, this development could significantly reduce travel time to remote islands. However, the project remains in the feasibility study phase. Specific timelines for the commencement of services in Satun, as well as final operational details and safety certifications, are yet to be confirmed by the Ministry.
