Thai Ministry of Culture Challenges Miss Universe Cambodia 2026 Over Historical Imagery
Thailand's Ministry of Culture has formally requested that the Miss Universe Cambodia 2026 pageant correct its use of historical Thai photographs presented as Cambodian cultural heritage.
On September 21, 2026, Thailand’s Minister of Culture, Sabida Thaiseth, addressed concerns regarding the Miss Universe Cambodia 2026 pageant. The Ministry of Culture issued a formal request for the organization to cease the dissemination of specific historical imagery and information that misrepresents Thai cultural heritage as Cambodian.
The controversy centers on a photograph used during the pageant, which the Ministry identified as a 1906 image of a woman from Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand, taken during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The Ministry noted that the pageant utilized this image without proper attribution and included the Fine Arts Department’s seal, potentially misleading the public regarding the origin of the traditional attire depicted.
Minister Sabida emphasized that the Ministry, which oversees the Fine Arts Department and the National Archives, expects the pageant to rectify these inaccuracies and exercise greater caution when citing historical sources. For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding cultural representation and historical ownership in Southeast Asia. While the Ministry has requested the removal of the content and a public correction, it remains to be confirmed how the Miss Universe Cambodia organization will respond to these demands and whether the pageant will issue a formal apology or update its historical references.
