Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property Warns Against Digital Piracy
The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has issued a warning regarding the legal consequences of distributing pirated movies and series, emphasizing increased monitoring of online platforms.
On September 21, 2026, Oramon Sapthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), announced intensified efforts to combat digital copyright infringement in Thailand. According to Khaosod Online, the department is collaborating with internet service providers and platform operators to identify and block unauthorized distribution of films and series. This initiative aligns with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supachai Suthamphan, who aims to strengthen intellectual property protections in the digital economy.
The DIP reports that illegal operators are increasingly using complex methods to bypass detection, such as utilizing overseas servers, frequently changing website domains, and using social media to lure users into private groups or paid subscription schemes for pirated content. The department warns that engaging with these platforms carries significant risks for consumers, including potential exposure to malicious software or data theft.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights a stricter regulatory environment regarding digital media consumption. While the DIP is actively working to curb these activities, the specific legal penalties for individual users versus large-scale distributors remain a subject of ongoing enforcement.
