Abbot Tragically Dies in Sa Kaeo Flash Flood Incident
A 67-year-old abbot in Sa Kaeo province passed away after being swept into a drainage pipe while clearing debris during heavy flooding.
On September 20, 2026, a tragic accident occurred at the Luang Pu Samrit Phon Pho Yan meditation center in Wang Nam Yen district, Sa Kaeo province. According to Khaosod Online, the 67-year-old abbot, Phra Chaiyaporn, lost his life after being pulled into a drainage pipe by strong currents.
Following hours of heavy rainfall, the abbot had attempted to clear weeds and debris blocking the water flow in a canal near the meditation center. It is believed that the force of the floodwater caused him to lose his footing, dragging him into a drainage pipe approximately one meter in diameter. Despite the efforts of local rescue teams from the Sawang Sa Kaeo Foundation, who performed CPR after recovering his body, he could not be resuscitated.
For residents and travelers in the region, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by flash floods and strong currents during the monsoon season. Water levels can rise rapidly, and drainage systems can become hazardous suction points.
