Thailand to Implement New Data Center Regulations by Mid-October
The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) is finalizing new regulatory standards for data centers to manage resource consumption and industrial zoning.
According to Khaosod Online, Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), announced that Thailand is preparing to enforce new regulations for the data center industry by mid-October 2026. The initiative aims to establish clear guidelines for resource usage, specifically regarding electricity and water consumption, to ensure that the rapid growth of the sector does not negatively impact household utilities.
Key aspects of the upcoming policy include the classification of data centers by size and energy demand. For instance, hyperscale facilities may be subject to specific requirements if their power consumption exceeds 100 megawatts. Furthermore, the government intends to mandate that industrial-scale data centers be located within designated industrial estates to streamline infrastructure management. The Ministry of Energy is currently working on defining specific consumption thresholds, while a dedicated electricity tariff for the data center sector is already in place.
