Thailand Launches National Disaster Insurance Scheme
The Thai government has approved a national disaster insurance program covering approximately 30 million households, effective this October.
According to a report by Thai Post, the Thai government has officially approved a 'National Disaster Insurance System' following a cabinet resolution on September 1, 2026. Kulwalee Nop-amornbodi, Chair of the House Committee on Land, Natural Resources, and Environment, announced that the state will cover insurance premiums for approximately 30 million households across the country.
This initiative marks a shift from reactive post-disaster relief to a proactive insurance-based protection model. The policy provides coverage for damages caused by natural disasters, including floods, storms, and earthquakes. Under the scheme, homeowners are eligible for compensation of up to 100,000 baht per house for structural damage, while a payout of 2,000,000 baht is designated for cases involving loss of life.
For residents and long-term expatriates, this development represents a significant change in how the state manages disaster recovery.
