A painting purchased for $30 at a Michigan estate sale has been identified as a long-lost work by surrealist artist Gertrude Abercrombie, potentially worth over $8 million baht.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, a treasure hunter in the United States recently made a remarkable discovery after purchasing an old painting at a Michigan estate sale for just $30 (approximately 1,000 Thai baht). The artwork, titled “Alderman Merriam’s Shells,” was created in 1951 by the renowned Chicago-based surrealist artist Gertrude Abercrombie.
The buyer became suspicious of the painting's origin after noticing a signature and date, “Abercrombie, ’51,” in the bottom left corner. Further investigation revealed a photograph of the same piece, still in its original frame, displayed in a past exhibition dedicated to the artist. Experts now estimate that the painting could fetch as much as $250,000 at auction, which is equivalent to approximately 8.3 million Thai baht.
For residents and art enthusiasts, this story serves as a reminder of the hidden value that can sometimes be found in local estate sales and antique markets.
