Turkish Fugitive Captured After Eight Years of Evasion
A Turkish man convicted of robbery has been arrested in Istanbul after eight years on the run, during which he lived as a woman using his sister's identity.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Turkish authorities have apprehended Tugrul Bashar, a man who had been evading a three-year prison sentence since 2018. Bashar was originally convicted for three counts of robbery committed while impersonating a government official in 2010.
Following his escape, Bashar successfully avoided capture for eight years by undergoing a significant physical transformation. He lived in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district disguised as a woman, reportedly assuming the identity of his sister. The disguise was so effective that police struggled to match him to his original suspect photographs. Investigators eventually identified him after monitoring his family members and noticing irregularities at his sister’s residence, where two women appeared to be sharing a single identity when venturing out in public.
