Abbot and Monks Defrocked Following Drug Arrest in Buriram

According to a report by Thai Post on September 18, 2026, law enforcement officers in Buriram province, including police, border patrol, and military personnel, apprehended an abbot and two monks from a temple in Prakhon Chai district. The arrests occurred after the group was caught running a red light while traveling in a sedan. Upon inspection, authorities discovered nearly 200 methamphetamine pills in their possession.
The suspects reportedly admitted to purchasing the narcotics from another monk located in Phutthaisong district. Following the arrest, the individuals were defrocked. The former abbot expressed concern regarding a religious ceremony scheduled at the temple for September 20, which he will no longer be able to attend. Reports indicate that the temple previously housed four monks; with three now in custody, only one remains at the site.
