Four Monks Arrested in Buriram Drug Crackdown
Authorities in Buriram province have arrested four monks linked to methamphetamine possession and use, following a coordinated operation by police and military units.
On September 18, 2026, a joint task force comprising police, military personnel, and local administrative officials conducted a series of raids in Buriram province, resulting in the arrest of four Buddhist monks. According to Khaosod Online, the operation began near the Nong Kung intersection in Mueang Buriram district and expanded to temples located in the Prakhon Chai and Phutthaisong districts.
Authorities seized a total of 184 methamphetamine pills during the arrests. Reports indicate that the abbot of one of the involved temples confessed to using funds received from religious offerings to instruct junior monks to purchase the illicit substances for personal consumption.
For residents and visitors, this incident highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to address drug-related issues within religious institutions.
