Illegal Hotel and Exotic Animal Discovery in Chiang Mai
Authorities in Chiang Mai raided a residence housing an illegal hotel and a white lion cub, following complaints from local residents.
On September 18, 2026, a joint task force including the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division, Chiang Mai provincial authorities, and tourist police executed a search warrant at a house on Charoen Suk Road in the Chang Phueak sub-district of Chiang Mai.
Acting on reports from neighbors regarding loud roaring noises and concerns over public safety, officials discovered a 2–3 month-old female white lion cub being kept by a Chinese caretaker. The property owner, identified as a 40-year-old Chinese national named Ms. Wang, was present alongside two other Chinese employees who held valid work permits.
Upon further inspection, authorities found that the upper floors of the residence had been converted into an unauthorized daily-rental hotel. At the time of the raid, eight Chinese tourists were staying at the premises. The facility was operating without a hotel license and was reportedly restricting access exclusively to Chinese nationals.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights ongoing enforcement efforts against unlicensed hospitality operations and the illegal possession of exotic wildlife. While the individuals involved are currently being processed by local authorities, investigations are ongoing to determine if the operation is linked to broader illicit networks. It remains to be confirmed what specific legal charges will be filed against the owner and how the lion cub will be managed by the Protected Areas Regional Office.
