Bangkok Launches Dengue Vaccination Pilot for Primary Students

According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a new initiative to combat dengue fever, which remains a significant health concern in Thailand. Between January 1 and August 19, 2026, Thailand recorded 21,620 dengue cases and 31 deaths, with Bangkok accounting for 1,785 cases and 4 deaths.

To address these figures, the BMA Health Department has introduced the 'Dengue Immunization Project for Grade 4 Students' for the 2026 academic year. This pilot program is being implemented in 40 schools under BMA jurisdiction across five districts identified as recurring hotspots: Khlong San, Thon Buri, Bangkok Yai, and others. The strategy emphasizes a three-pronged approach: 'Birth-Bite-Inject,' which involves eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, preventing bites, and providing vaccinations.

For residents and travelers, this development highlights the ongoing risk of dengue in urban areas. While the program focuses on school-aged children, health authorities continue to stress that adults, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions are at higher risk of severe complications. It remains to be confirmed how the BMA will evaluate the success of this pilot and whether the program will be expanded to other districts or age groups in the future. Residents are advised to maintain vigilance regarding mosquito control measures in their living environments.
