EEC Targets Rayong and Chachoengsao as Global Data Center Hubs
The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is launching a 'new cake' energy strategy to attract data center investments without impacting public electricity supplies.
According to Khaosod Online, the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is positioning the Ban Chang district in Rayong and Chachoengsao as primary hubs for global data center investments. Chula Sukmanop, Secretary-General of the EEC Office, stated that the strategy focuses on leveraging submarine cable networks and ensuring a stable supply of clean energy.
To address concerns regarding power shortages, the EEC has introduced a 'new cake' policy. Rather than drawing from existing electricity reserves—which have decreased as demand rises—the initiative aims to create new power supplies specifically for data center operators. Investors may be required to participate in clean energy production or partner with renewable energy providers to meet these requirements. Current demand for data center electricity in the area is estimated at 220 megawatts and is rising weekly. This growth is being integrated into the new Power Development Plan (PDP).
For residents and travelers, this development signals a significant shift in regional infrastructure and industrial focus. While the initiative aims to bolster Thailand's competitiveness against neighboring countries, the long-term impact on local utility costs and the specific timeline for the implementation of these clean energy projects remain to be confirmed.
