Election Commission Files Charges Against 77 Individuals in Senate Selection Probe

According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has officially resolved to file charges against 77 individuals suspected of involvement in irregularities during the recent Senate selection. ECT Chairman Narong Klannarong confirmed that while an investigative panel had initially proposed action against 229 people, the commission narrowed the scope to 77, including 26 currently serving senators.

Notably, 21 prominent figures associated with the Bhumjaithai Party were excluded from the charges. Chairman Narong explained that the decision to drop the case against these individuals stemmed from the testimony of a key witness. This witness, who had previously alleged that meetings were held and cash payments were distributed at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters, retracted their statement. The commission deemed this witness unreliable, leading to the dismissal of those specific allegations.

For residents and observers, this development highlights ongoing scrutiny regarding the integrity of the Senate selection process.
