Thailand Sees Surge in Intellectual Property Filings
Intellectual property applications in Thailand rose by over 10% in the first eight months of 2026, according to the Department of Intellectual Property.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has recorded a significant increase in activity during the first eight months of 2026. Between January and August, the department received 53,794 applications for intellectual property (IP) protection, including trademarks, patents, and design patents, marking a 10.43% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Director-General Oramon Sapthaweetham noted that the number of registered IP items reached 39,096, reflecting a 7.88% growth over the previous year. Additionally, there were 14,811 copyright notifications filed during this period. While copyright protection is granted automatically upon creation, many creators continue to formally notify the department to establish a record of their work.
For residents and business owners in Thailand, this trend suggests a growing emphasis on brand protection and innovation within the local market. A more robust IP environment may lead to a wider variety of unique local products and services, potentially enhancing the quality and authenticity of goods available to consumers and travelers. However, it remains to be seen how this increase in filings will impact the speed of processing times for new applicants.
