Authorities Dismantle Illegal Migrant Registration Ring in Surat Thani
Thai police and multi-agency task forces have arrested 26 individuals, including two state officials, for allegedly operating a fraudulent migrant registration scheme.
On September 17, 2026, a joint task force led by Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Samran Nuanma and Pol. Lt. Gen. Nopsil Poonsawat executed an operation dubbed “Closing the Shadow Labor 2” in Surat Thani province. According to Khaosod Online, the operation resulted in the arrest of 26 suspects accused of facilitating the illegal issuance of “Type 0” identification cards—documents typically reserved for individuals without formal registration status—to migrant workers.
The investigation, which involved collaboration between the Royal Thai Police, the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA), the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), is an expansion of a previous crackdown conducted on July 4, 2026. Notably, the operation implicated two state officials suspected of involvement in the illicit registration process.
For residents and travelers, this crackdown highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to tighten oversight of civil registration and labor documentation. While the operation aims to curb identity fraud, it may lead to increased scrutiny of documentation at local administrative offices in the region.
