EU Implements New Packaging Regulations Affecting Thai Exports
Thailand’s Office of Trade Policy and Strategy (OTPS) has issued a warning regarding the European Union’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which took effect on August 12, 2026.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the European Union has officially implemented the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) as of August 12, 2026. This new trade policy mandates strict sustainability standards for all types of packaging throughout the supply chain, ranging from plastic bags and food containers to e-commerce shipping materials.
Key requirements under the PPWR include enhanced recyclability standards and rigorous restrictions on hazardous chemicals and heavy metals. Notably, the regulation explicitly prohibits the use of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food-contact packaging. The Office of Trade Policy and Strategy (OTPS) has alerted Thai exporters to these changes, emphasizing that compliance is now essential for maintaining market access within the EU.
