Local Opposition Grows Against Yuam River Diversion Project

According to a report by Thai Post, residents across three provinces have united to oppose the use of forest land for the Yuam-Bhumibol Dam water diversion project. The initiative, managed by the Royal Irrigation Department (RID), aims to increase water supply to the Bhumibol Dam.

Lao-fang Bandit-therdsakul, a Member of Parliament for the People's Party, visited Mae Ngao village in Mae Hong Son province to assess the situation. He noted that the RID has sent formal requests to several local sub-district administrative organizations (SAOs) seeking permission to utilize forest areas for the project.

Local communities have expressed confusion and concern regarding recent developments. Residents reported sightings of unidentified individuals entering the area to engage with locals in a manner described as 'mass mobilization' efforts. However, these individuals have not disclosed which agency or private company they represent, leaving villagers uncertain about the project's current status and the intentions of those involved.

For residents and travelers in the region, this situation highlights ongoing tensions regarding land use and environmental management in northern Thailand. While the project is intended to bolster water resources, the lack of transparency regarding site visits and the formal requests for forest land remain key points of contention. It is yet to be confirmed which entities are responsible for the unauthorized outreach to villagers or how the RID will address the growing local opposition.
